Amongst the dust city that was Brisbane yesterday the boy took me to the movies to see “500 days of summer.” Now if you’re expecting one of those cliché feel good romantic movies, you’ll be surprisingly mistaken. 500 days of Summer is a well written and quirky take on the romance genre, featuring popular art house favourites Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel in what I would say is the best indie film of this year.
Think Harry Met Sally, if Sally repeatedly stabbed Harry in the heart with a knitting needle. It’s an anti-fairytale romance about a boy who dreams of finding his soul mate who falls head over heels for a girl who doesn’t believe in fate, love and anything else cheesy to be associated with those words we would normally hear in this kind of romantic comedy. Without giving too much of the plot away, this film throws a cliché in your face and then hacks it to shreds like one taking a pair of scissors to the photo albums after a bad breakup.
The thing I loved about the movie is the viewer can completely relate to both main characters. To sum it up simply we’ve all been there on both sides, and that’s what makes this movie so real and universal. The ending? Well I won’t ruin it for you, but if you’re expecting the cliché happy ending you would normally get from this kind of film, you’ll be quite surprised, but satisfied none the less.
Both the boy and I loved it and in a time when romantic comedies are all roses and chocolates this flick gives its viewers the nice little reality check that’s been lacking in movies of late.
So have any of you guys seen it?
